The Days You Feel Dumber After Using AI — How to Pay Down Your Cognitive Debt
That dumber feeling isn’t impostor syndrome. It’s a measured phenomenon. But the standard prescription is wrong.

Some evenings, after a full day of working with AI, a thin fog settles over your mind. You clearly shipped a lot — yet you can’t feel what you made. It was your report, but asked to explain it, you stumble. It’s easy to write this off as laziness. But it isn’t a mood. It’s a measured phenomenon.
That feeling has an EEG signature
At the MIT Media Lab, researchers measured brain activity (EEG) while people wrote essays. The group assisted by an LLM showed the lowest connectivity between brain regions, the weakest sense of ownership over what they wrote, and the highest failure rate when asked to quote a sentence they had just written. They gave the state a name — cognitive debt.1
This isn’t one outlier study. A Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon survey of 319 knowledge workers found that the more people trusted AI, the less critical-thinking effort they invested and the less diverse their output became.2 Another survey of 666 people found that heavier AI use predicted lower critical-thinking scores, mediated by cognitive offloading, with the effect strongest among younger users.3
Three studies, one direction. The dumber feeling is real, and it has a name.
But the standard prescription is wrong
This is where most pieces end: “AI rots your brain, so use it less.” For someone who can’t stop using AI, that prescription is wrong and useless. Your colleague is already working twice as fast with it.
We need a better frame. Cognitive debt is debt, not damage. Accrued unconsciously, it’s dangerous. Managed deliberately, it’s leverage. Debt isn’t inherently bad — unpaid debt is.
The mechanism: effort is encoding
Why does offloading become debt? In learning, what builds memory encoding is effort — the “desirable difficulty” and “generation effect” of cognitive psychology. The work of producing an answer yourself is what makes the knowledge yours.
AI removes that effort. Remove effort, you remove encoding; remove encoding, you remove ownership. Speed and learning trade off. The problem isn’t offloading itself — we’ve always offloaded to notes, calendars, colleagues. The danger is offloading the very skill you’re paid for, unconsciously, on compound interest.
The protocol: Think First, Prompt Second
Four rules for managing the debt. None of them is “use AI less.” All of them put effort back in on purpose.
- Generate before you retrieve. Before prompting, make your own rough draft for 30 seconds. Encoding happens in those 30 seconds.
- AI for the chores, judgment in your hands. Choose consciously what to offload. Hand over formatting, summaries, boilerplate; keep the core judgment.
- Run a retrieval check. Can you re-explain the output without looking? If not, you’re holding debt on that knowledge.
- Schedule brain-only reps. Block daily no-AI thinking time on your calendar. It’s the strength training that repays the loan.

A short note for PMs and designers
If you build, you can design tools that create less debt: friction by design, prompts that ask “show your reasoning” first, and confidence calibration that corrects the user’s certainty. Designing so AI doesn’t put the user in a passive seat — that’s human-centered AI in practice.
